I would like to discuss with those of you that might have knowledge of Swing Out involving the LEAD/FOLLOW procedure and concept involving Swing Out. Can someone explain this to me. I get a lot of questions and I would like to know myself. I ave had the pleasure of metting and getting to know many of you that teach or just dance wing out andhave shared conversations about what I do. I would like to talk more about the two dances.

I welcome the friendly communication!

In my opinion, I think good dance lessons can clear the lead-follow issue. The problem occurs when a control person cannot let go and wants to do both positions. Sounds crazy, but I have seen followers that have been instructors have a hard time not reverting back into the lead position. Thus the true lead has a tough time on the dance floor. If you are dancing with an instructor, establish who will be the lead and enjoy yourself. Just one former instructors opinion. Do you find this valuable?

thank you for replying. I want to hear from anyone who is a teacher thus has experience inteaching dance. I agree with you on your reply. To be clear about this, your reply is really an answer to a question about solutions to a problem with a lead or a follow. Not about what detemines what follower shold do. Or inother words, how does a leader get a follower to do actions/patterns/moves/weight changes.

To address you reply which does have merit, and also I want to say that what you have mentioned does happen and has happened. It is hard for any perosn to learn one way to do something and then turn around and try to learn somethign lesethat is opposite what they have previously learned, like..learing the lead and then learning the followers part. What you are saying or what I understand or am interpreting you to say is, that it is a problem when a an instructor learns the lead part, then goes to follow and can't because she is still in lead mode. She just has to learn how to switch back and forth. It is a skill that takes a while to develope.
Now my question put in another way is this...How does a follower know to do anything in the dance based on the leader?

I think you have to know the person you are dancing with. What I do when dancing with someone new I take a half a song to feel them out, then we go forward with the dance. I often find that I don't dance well with everyone. Do you find this valuable?
